About the Book
What Makes Me Happy, Healthy, and Alive? promotes an awareness of the basic elements necessary for a wholesome life. It explores the idea of what we need to thrive, nudging us to look beyond the usual answers of food, water, fresh air, and exercise. Love, family, and community—along with finding ways to grow, create, contribute, feel safe, and have fun—are critical to truly thrive. What Makes Me Happy, Healthy, and Alive? ingrains in young children that all of us have basic needs and that it is okay to want them.
The Message
My takeaway message for children (and everyone) is an awareness of the basic elements needed for a wholesome life. My desire is for children to get an ingrained notion of the basic needs that must be met if they are to thrive and be happy—and that it is okay to expect these needs to be met. I want all parents and caregivers to have this same awareness and to realize it is their responsibility to fill these basic needs for their children.
I want children as young as toddlers to be exposed to and embrace these ideas so that as they go through life, they will know how important it is to fulfill their needs. Someday, they may become parents or caregivers and can continue the cycle. Every child deserves to understand the message presented in What Makes Me Healthy, Happy, and Alive?—for their own sake as well as the planet’s.

Got the children’s book yesterday. Congratulations! A great “hierarchy of needs” for little ones. And the illustrations are excellent. I especially like the last three.

You’ve put together a delightful story. The illustrations are wonderful! I loved your encouragement for children to address the essentials for healthy living – especially “To create”! I’m sure children will enjoy reading the story over and over again.
